# Troubleshooting

> Common issues and how to resolve them.

Running into problems? This guide covers the most common issues and how to fix them.

## Sandbox won't start

Your project runs in a cloud Linux sandbox. When you open a workspace, Botflow resumes (or boots) that sandbox before the preview and terminal become usable.

**Symptoms:**

* The workspace sits on a "Starting sandbox…" state longer than \~30 seconds
* Preview or terminal show a connection error
* Console errors about failed requests to `/api/projects/.../sandbox/...`

**Solutions:**

1. **Reload the page** — Resuming a hibernated sandbox is usually quick; a hard refresh re-runs the start handshake if it stalled.
2. **Check your network** — The IDE keeps a live connection to the sandbox. A flaky connection, restrictive corporate proxy, or VPN that blocks `*.vercel.run` can break preview and terminal streaming. Try a different network.
3. **Check status** — If sandboxes are down platform-wide, opening any project will fail the same way. Check the [Dashboard](https://botflow.io/projects) and try again shortly.

<Note>
  Sandboxes run server-side, so there are **no special browser requirements** — no `SharedArrayBuffer`, cross-origin isolation, or WebAssembly support needed. Any modern desktop browser works.
</Note>

### Dev server fails to start

**Symptoms:**

* Preview shows "Failed to start dev server"
* Terminal shows an error like `Port 5173 is already in use` or `Missing required environment variable`

**Solutions:**

1. **Check the terminal** — Click the Terminal tab at the bottom of Code view to see the full error output.
2. **Restart the dev server** — Click the Stop button, wait a few seconds, then click Start again.
3. **Check environment variables** — Open the ENV tab and verify all required variables are set (e.g., `VITE_CONVEX_URL`, API keys).
4. **Reinstall dependencies** — In the terminal, run:
   ```bash theme={null}
   rm -rf node_modules
   pnpm install
   pnpm dev
   ```
5. **Reset the workspace** — If the filesystem is corrupted, download your files (Download button), delete the project, and create a new one.

## AI agent issues

### Agent gets stuck in a loop

**Symptoms:**

* The agent keeps making the same change repeatedly
* It fails to complete a task after multiple attempts
* Tool calls repeat with the same parameters

**Solutions:**

1. **Be more specific** — Vague prompts like "fix it" can lead to loops. Try: "Fix the TypeError on line 23 by adding a null check before accessing user.name"
2. **Break the task down** — Instead of "refactor the entire auth system", try "Extract the login form into a separate component"
3. **Reset the conversation** — Click **Reset** in the toolbar to clear the chat history. Your files are not affected.
4. **Switch models** — Some models handle certain tasks better. Try switching from the default to Claude or vice versa.

### Agent makes incorrect changes

**Solutions:**

1. **Undo immediately** — Press `Cmd+Z` / `Ctrl+Z` in the editor to revert the last edit.
2. **Tell the agent what went wrong** — Example: "You deleted the useEffect hook, but it's needed for the subscription. Add it back."
3. **Use version control** — If you have GitHub connected, you can revert to a previous commit. See [GitHub Sync](/docs/features/github).

## Preview issues

### Preview shows a blank screen

**Possible causes:**

* JavaScript error in your app
* Missing environment variables
* Dev server not running

**Solutions:**

1. **Open browser dev tools** — Right-click the preview → Inspect → Check the Console tab for errors.
2. **Check the terminal** — Look for build errors or runtime crashes.
3. **Verify the route** — The path input at the top of the preview might be set to a route that doesn't exist. Change it to `/`.
4. **Hard reload** — Click the reload icon in the preview navigation bar.

### Preview doesn't update on save

**Solutions:**

1. **Check HMR** — Not all changes trigger hot module replacement. Config files and some CSS changes require a full reload.
2. **Manually reload** — Click the reload icon in the preview navigation bar.
3. **Restart the dev server** — Stop and restart to pick up all changes.

## GitHub sync issues

### Push fails

**Symptoms:**

* Error: "Failed to push to GitHub"
* "Conflict detected" message

**Solutions:**

1. **Check your connection** — Verify you're online and GitHub is accessible.
2. **Pull first** — If the remote has new commits, pull them before pushing. Click **Pull** in the GitHub panel.
3. **Resolve conflicts** — If there are merge conflicts, use the Conflict Resolution dialog to choose which version to keep.
4. **Re-authenticate** — Disconnect and reconnect GitHub in the GitHub panel.

### Pull shows conflicts

When your local files and the remote repository both have changes to the same file, you'll need to resolve conflicts.

**Solutions:**

1. **Review each conflicted file** — The conflict modal lists all files with conflicts.
2. **Choose a resolution:**
   * **Keep mine** — Use your local version, discard the remote change
   * **Use theirs** — Use the remote version, discard your local change
   * **Manual** — Apply both and edit the result in the editor
3. **Complete the pull** — After resolving all conflicts, the pull finishes automatically.

## Deployment issues

### Build fails during deploy

**Symptoms:**

* Publish panel shows "Build failed"
* Error message about missing files or failed commands

**Solutions:**

1. **Check the build locally first** — Run `pnpm build` in the terminal. If it fails locally, it will fail on deploy.
2. **Verify environment variables** — Open the ENV tab and ensure all required variables are set.
3. **Check the build output directory** — Botflow auto-detects `dist/`, `out/`, or `.next/`. If your build outputs elsewhere, adjust your config.
4. **Review the error log** — The Publish panel shows the full build output. Look for the specific error.

### Deploy succeeds but app is broken

**Symptoms:**

* Deploy completes successfully
* Live URL shows errors or blank screen

**Solutions:**

1. **Check environment variables** — Production builds may require different variables than dev. Verify all required vars are set in the ENV tab.
2. **Test the build output** — After running `pnpm build`, run `pnpm preview` (if available) to test the production build locally.
3. **Check browser console** — Open dev tools on the live URL to see runtime errors.

## Account & billing issues

### Can't create new projects

**Possible causes:**

* You've hit the active project limit for your plan
* Temporary service issue

**Solutions:**

1. **Check your project count** — Go to [My Projects](https://botflow.io/projects) and count your active projects.
2. **Archive or delete old projects** — Free plan is limited to 3 active projects. Archive or delete projects you're not using.
3. **Upgrade your plan** — If you need more active projects, consider upgrading to Pro or Max. See [Pricing](/docs/pricing).

### Credits ran out

**Solutions:**

1. **Use your own API key** — Requests with your own API key or OAuth don't use platform credits. See [Settings → Connections](/docs/features/settings#connections).
2. **Wait for reset** — Credits reset on the 1st of each month.
3. **Upgrade your plan** — Higher plans include more monthly credits. See [Pricing](/docs/pricing).

## Browser compatibility

The sandbox runs server-side, so the IDE itself has no exotic browser requirements — any current version of Chrome, Edge, Brave, Firefox, or Safari can drive a workspace.

**Recommended:**

* ✅ A recent version of Chrome, Edge, Brave, Firefox, or Safari
* ✅ A desktop or laptop — the workspace is a dense, multi-panel IDE designed for a large screen

<Note>
  Workspaces are built for desktop. You can **view** any deployed app from a phone or tablet, but building inside the IDE on a mobile browser isn't supported. If a panel renders oddly, make sure your browser is up to date and that no extension is blocking iframes or `*.vercel.run` connections.
